A successful project respects the community’s needs. We recognize this is not possible without the input and insight of residents and stakeholders. As we develop the terminal layout, we will continue working with Violet residents and the St. Bernard Parish community to design a project that aims to protects local quality of life.
The W. Smith Elementary School is currently located inside the proposed footprint of the future terminal. Port NOLA owns most of the undeveloped land in Violet. The Port has not purchased the school or the school property to date. Although, we have identified two potential locations for the new W. Smith Elementary School within the property owned by Port NOLA.
Port NOLA is ready to fund the construction of a new, modern elementary school now. The sooner the new school is built, the less impact terminal construction will have on students. We are in discussions with the School Board to agree on a path forward. Port NOLA will provide funds to the School Board for the construction of the new school.
